A quick crash course, for those who don’t know, HVAC, or Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, combine three functions into one system that controls air flow and distributes that air (warm or cool) through ducts throughout your home. HVAC systems are a major factor in your home’s energy usage – nearly half, or about 44 percent of your utility bill, can be attributed to heating and cooling.
So it’s critical to choose your HVAC equipment wisely. Here are some options and ratings our Beach Air technicians can help you consider to make your decision easier – and a smart one:
*Split systems: Comprised of a heat pump and central air conditioning unit that has a condenser outside and an evaporator coil inside. Basically, each unit transports heat from one to the other via refrigerant. In the summer, the system extracts heat from indoor air and transfers it outside so cooled indoor air can be recirculated through the ducts in your home by a fan.
*Packaged system: One that combines the condensing unit and evaporator coil into one outdoor unit.
*Ductless mini split system: Ideal for for bonus rooms, sun rooms, home remodels and additions, server rooms and mechanical rooms.
*SEER rating: The Seasonal Energy Efficiency (SEER) rating of AC equipment typically range from 13 to 23, with the higher numbers signifying more efficient units. Energy Star models are required to have a minimum SEER of 14.5.
*HSPF factor: The higher the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) rating for heat pumps, the less electricity the unit needs to run, or more efficiently it works.
*Sound levels: It’s not something you think about when HVAC shopping, but the noise level created by the condensing unit outside could interfere with your indoor peace and quiet.
